Children of obese parents are most at risk of becoming obese.

The study is based on data from a population-based cohort of 2,269 children aged between eight and eleven years old.
These findings are important because they confirm that in children genes play a very important role in determining body weight. Researchers used a new method called Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis (GCTA), to investigate the molecular genetic heritability of body weight in children. At present only a few genetic variants have been discovered, and these explain a very small amount of individual differences in body weight (~2%). These findings suggest there are hundreds of other genetic variants influencing body weight that are yet to be discovered.

Foods that makes you hungry

Hunger is one of the biggest issues when you are on a diet. It's the most typical problem that people will encounter. But there are some foods that you need to avoid when you are dieting. Here is an example of 4 foods that can increase your hunger levels.
Sugary Cereals: Are bad for your diet and increase your hunger levels.  Eating ceareals you become very hungry after eating them, why? You are going to get a huge blood sugar spike after eating this food. This is then followed by a sharp decline as insulin is released and comes and sucks all that glucose from the blood, giving you a decline of blood sugar, what makes you hungry again! For breakfast you can better eat oatmeal without sugar or bran cereal, it helps to control your hunger levels.

Slim Weight Patch

White rice: makes you hungry for much the same reason as sugary cereals. When the blood sugar levels drop, this sets of the hunger signal inside the brain that's going to prompt you to definitely eat more food.

Snack bars: In regards to hunger, snack bars will be very problematic. The problem here is that these will tend to be very low in total protein and sometimes fat content, it cannot balance out the carbohydrates. After consuming them you can experience a increase in your blood sugar and then sudden decrease in energy levels. The result of this is a boost to your blood sugar, that will make you have very depleted energy levels. As Snacking will reduce energy, many people will continue to snack more throughout the day to try recover their energy levels. As eating more it will make you eat more calories, and you will find it harder to lose weight.

Slim Weight Patch

Candy: candy is one of the one of the worst foods as far as hunger is concerned. While you may feel like this gives you a good energy burst and quickly fills you up, that's just the sugar high talking!  Candy made out of pure sugar is even worse for you from your diet perspective than snack foods that contain fat, because at least with the addition of fat you will not see quite the shoot in blood sugar levels. Candy can actually be much worse for you then snack bats. Candy will therefore give you a quick sugar rush, followed by a quick loss of energy. Many people will experience a dramatic increase in blood sugar levels when eating candy, as it contains pure sugar.

Adult obesity rates increased in 16 states during the past year

The new report breaks down obesity rates and anti-obesity initiatives by state, regions, and ethnic groups and also documents the rise in obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. In the past year, obesity rates rose in 16 states and fell in none, according to the eighth annual "F As In Fat" report, prepared jointly by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Twelve states now have obesity rates of 30% or more, led by Mississippi at 34.4%, the report says. That's up from a single state over 30% four years ago. But the report does offer a glimmer of hope: It marks the first time that there were fewer than 20 states with increasing adult obesity rates. Source: WebMD

Lady Gaga fan of the baby food diet

Baby food sales are surging in supermarkets. A Coles spokeswoman said baby food sales had jumped 20 per cent in the past quarter. A Woolworths spokesman said they had experienced a 10 per cent year-on-year jump. Baby food diet advocates claim it is possible to lose 9kg in six weeks when the diet is combined with workouts.

Baby food products are subject to stricter nutrition controls than any other products, limiting salt, sugar and other additives. Pots and packets of baby food often contain between 400 and 600 kilojoules. The Jennifer Aniston version of the baby food diet is said to include up to 14 small pots a day to stave off hunger pangs, plus a regular meal of fish and steamed vegetables.

Advanced Health LTD

Dietitian Karen Inge said: "It is not an effective weight loss solution, as it has inadequate levels of calcium, fibre and kilojoules for adults, and is bland, so it will leave them hungry, bored and dissatisfied." The diet's creator is Tracy Anderson, the personal trainer who is also credited with sculpting the figures of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

She said: "Liquid cleanses do help you lose weight but you will gain more the next week. I wanted something where you can eliminate toxicity, break bad habits but still have your digestive system going. Stars including Lady Gaga, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Cheryl Cole are believed to have used the baby food diet.

The "tipping point" in obesity often occurs before two years of age

While many adults consider a chubby baby healthy, too many plump infants grow up to be obese teens. New research suggests that the "tipping point" in obesity often occurs before two years of age, and sometimes as early as three months, when the child is learning how much and what to eat. This study comes in the midst of alarming rates of childhood obesity, which now ranks as one of the most prominent health concerns in the United States today. While some hospitals have begun offering healthy eating and weight loss program for children, what hasn't been as clear is how early to intervene.

Children who drink full-fat milk are less likely to become overweight

It said that a study of eight-year-old children found that those who drank the most full-fat milk had a lower body mass index (BMI). The finding that full-fat milk was associated with lower BMI is unexpected and the researcher herself was surprised by this. Two theories are put forward: either the children who drink full-fat milk have fewer snacks and sugary drinks, or their diets.

Both theories are plausible, but these results need to be repeated in a larger group of children to see if the same links are found. People should not give their children full-fat milk to reduce their BMI on the basis of this research.

Being overweight is not just the result of personal choices about what you eat

Prevalence of obesity in infants under 6 months had risen 73 percent since 1980. 'Since they're eating only formula or breast milk, and never exactly got a lot of exercise, the obvious explanations for obesity don't work for babies,' he points out. 'You have to look beyond the obvious.' The search for the non-obvious has led to a familiar villain: early-life exposure to traces of chemicals in the environment. Evidence has been steadily accumulating that certain hormone-mimicking pollutants, ubiquitous in the food chain, have two previously unsuspected effects.

They act on genes in the developing fetus and newborn to turn more precursor cells into fat cells, which stay with you for life. And they may alter metabolic rate, so that the body hoards calories rather than burning them, like a physiological Scrooge. 'The evidence now emerging says that being overweight is not just the result of personal choices about what you eat, combined with inactivity,' says Retha Newbold of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in North Carolina, part of the National Institutes of Health."

Research has linked tonsillectomy to accelerated weight gain

Tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy significantly increased the odds of being overweight and obese at 8 years by 61% and 136%, respectively. Adenoidectomy alone did not increase the risk of becoming overweight, but it did increase the risk of obesity by 94%. Overweight status at 2 years of age was not linked to subsequent tonsillectomy, suggesting that the operation led to overweight and obesity and not vice-versa.

Explaining the increased risk"Longitudinal data on weight and height in the years before and after surgery," the authors note, "suggest that (adeno) tonsillectomy forms a turning point between a period of growth faltering and a period of catch-up growth," which may explain the increased risk of becoming overweight and explain the increased risk of becoming overweight after the operation.

Thousands of people are winning thousands of dollars by dropping unwanted pounds

Diet betting is basically making a wager that you will lose a certain amount of weight in a specified amount of time," nutritionist Elisa Zied told CBS station WCBS-TV in New York. Co-workers and friends have made small weight loss wagers for years, but now there are Web sites to keep you on track. Mary Lou Wehrli her brother, Grant, are using www.fatbet.net to try to lose about 20 pounds each. The stakes? "The loser will buy the victor dinner or lunch for six at a sushi house," Mary Lou said.

They post their weight at least once a week on the Web site and can taunt each other on the site's blog. "That motivation has had me get off the couch when I really didn't want to," Grant said. Users say the teasing and tempting is all part of the fun. Both weighing in and paying up are totally dependent on the honor system. "This motivation of this younger brother that's going to lose a bet to me, it's just so cool," Mary Lou said. On another site, stickk.com, when you place a wager, you sign a commitment contract. You hand over your credit card number and each week that you don't meet your goal you're charged. "I'm putting $10 on the line each week. Each week I don't lose that pound, I lose the $10," stickk.com's Jordan Goldberg said.

Sleep loss leads to increased ghrelin and decreased leptin, a double blow that stimulates appetite

Two hormones that are primarily responsible for regulating the body's energy balance, telling the body when it is hungry and when it is full. The study found that chronic insomnia disrupts one of these two hormones. "The current study shows that insomnia patients have a dysregulation in energy balance that could explain why these patients gain weight over time," said Motivala, who is also a member of the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at UCLA.

"This is an exciting finding because it highlights how diverse behaviors like sleep and eating are connected. We are just beginning to explore the possible consequences of these connections, but it is another example of the importance of a good night's sleep for the body."

To date, no study has evaluated nocturnal levels of the two hormones, ghrelin and leptin, in primary insomnia patients. Ghrelin, a peptide secreted by the stomach, stimulates appetite and increases before meals. Leptin, which affects body weight and is secreted primarily by fat cells, signals the hypothalamus regarding the degree of fat storage in the body; decreased leptin tells the body there is a calorie shortage and promotes hunger, while increased levels promote energy expenditure.

Extract from the African mango may shed pounds

Lab research has shown that extracts from the plant's seed may inhibit body fat production, through effects on certain genes and enzymes that regulate metabolism. For the current study, researchers at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon randomly assigned 102 overweight adults to take either the plant extract or a placebo twice a day for 10 weeks.

The study participants did not follow any special diet and were told to maintain their normal exercise levels. By the end of the study, the extract group had lost a significant amount of weight an average of roughly 28 pounds, while the placebo group showed almost no change.
At the same time, they showed declines in "bad" LDL cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Dr. Julius E. Oben and his colleagues report the findings in the online journal Lipids in Health and Disease. The Fairfield, California- based Gateway Health Alliances, Inc. supplied the Irvingia gabonensis extract and partially funded the research.

iNet Squared Ltd

The study is the first well-controlled clinical trial of the extract's effectiveness as a weight-loss aid, the researchers note. But the findings, they write, suggest that Irvingia gabonensis could offer a "useful tool" for battling the growing worldwide problem of obesity and its related ills.
A few patients on the extract reported side effects, including headaches, sleep problems and gas, but the rates were similar in the placebo group.

Family simply too fat to work

They haven’t worked in 11 years, claiming their weight is due to a hereditary condition. Instead, the family spend their days in front of a television borrowed from a friend.

Mr Chawner said: ‘We love TV. It’s on from the moment we get up. Often I’m so tired from watching TV I have to have a nap.’
Yet of their £22,508 a year in tax-free benefits equivalent to a £30,000 salary, Mr Chawner said: ‘What we get barely covers the bills and puts food on the table. It’s not our fault we can’t work. We deserve more.’

The family claim to spend £50 a week on food, including chocolate, chips and pies, and consume 3,000 calories each a day. The recommended maximum intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men.

Gene therapy, a promising new treatment for obesity

The Ohio State University Medical Center are studying a potentially long-term treatment that involves injecting a gene directly into one of the critical feeding and weight control centers of the brain. "Obesity significantly increases the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and some cancers," says Dr. Matthew During, senior author and professor in Ohio State Medical Center's department of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics.

"Our findings represent a promising new treatment for obesity that could ultimately provide a much safer and more effective approach than some conventional therapies." Scientists have discovered that a particular gene, BDNF, can result in improved insulin sensitivity, reduced fat mass and weight loss when active in the hypothalamus. The findings are published online in the journal Nature Medicine.
